Cresco Bank & Trust to Host Iowa Fraud Fighters Event
Cresco Bank & Trust will host a free consumer fraud awareness event on September 22, 2026, from 9:30-11:00am in the Cresco Bank & Trust Community Room. The event is designed to help residents of Northeast Iowa recognize common scams and learn practical steps to protect themselves against fraud.
"Fraud continues to be an ongoing issue for consumers today," says Erin Ludwig, Market Vice President at Cresco Bank & Trust. "We want to provide local opportunities to help educate folks in Northeast Iowa on common scams and arm them with tools and tips to prevent fraud."
The event, held in partnership with Iowa Fraud Fighters and Northeast Iowa RSVP, will feature a panel discussion with local experts, including Howard County Sheriff Rick Busch, Cresco Chief of Police Tim Ruroden, Mike Johnson of Johnson Computers, and Mary Ann Nuezil from Cresco Bank & Trust. The conversation will be facilitated by Roger Huinker, a retired financial services provider, Iowa Fraud Fighters and Northeast Iowa RSVP volunteer. Together, the panel will share firsthand insights on how fraud affects consumers and what they can do to stay safe. Attendees will leave with a heightened ability to spot red flags, along with additional fraud prevention resources they can put to use right away.
The need for this kind of education is clear. In the first half of 2026 alone, $77.9 million in fraud losses were investigated across Iowa, representing 211 investigations spanning 96 communities. These numbers highlight just how widespread fraud has become, and why staying informed is one of the best defenses available to consumers.
By bringing together law enforcement, technology, and banking professionals, the event offers a well-rounded look at how scams operate and how residents can respond. Whether attendees are worried about phone scams, online fraud, or identity theft, the panel aims to provide clear, actionable guidance that anyone can follow.
