A Penny for Your Thoughts:

Saying Goodbye to an American Icon

It’s official: the penny is heading for retirement. The U.S. Treasury has announced that 2026 will mark the final year the one-cent coin is minted, bringing a quiet end to a piece of American history that has been jingling in our pockets for over two centuries. As we prepare to say farewell, let's look back at the humble penny's rich history, explain why it’s being retired, and share what to expect next.

Feed the Pig Fundraiser for Local Food Pantries

Celebrate Pork Month this October with the 'Feed The Pig' community fundraiser! Decorah Bank & Trust, in partnership with the Lynch Family Companies and Gillette Pepsi Decorah (GPC), aim to support local food pantries throughout the month of October.

Decorah Bank has pledged to match up to $2,500 in community raised funds. GPC will also match up to $2,500, with the Lynch Family Foundation promising to do the same in pork donations.

We welcome donations in the form of cash and checks at all Decorah branches. For ease, checks can be made payable to one of three area food pantries: Northeast Iowa Community Action Corp, Decorah Community Food Pantry or Greater Area Food Pantry.

Each of the food pantries accepts monetary and food donations year-round. We encourage community members who may be interested in future donations to reach out to the individual food pantries involved. Your support can make a tangible difference in the lives of others, ensuring no one goes hungry.
