Mortgage Postcard Scam - Beware!

Mortgage Postcard Scam - Beware!

SCAM ALERT: Did you get a strange postcard about your mortgage? We are seeing more notices popping up that may look official but are actually designed to trick homeowners. Let's break down the red flags in this specific example so you know exactly what to watch for.

🚩 (1) False Urgency
The top of the letter screams "IMPORTANT NOTICE: RESPONSE NEEDED" and claims the matter is "time sensitive." Scammers use high-pressure language to make you panic and call them before you have time to think.

🚩 (2) The "Not Affiliated" Disclaimer
This is the biggest giveaway. Look closely at the bottom left corner. It explicitly admits the sender is the "National Info Center" and is "Not affiliated with, nor endorsed by DECORAH BANK AND TRUST COMPANY."

🚩 (3) Bizarre "Authentication" Phrases
The box containing "Mortgage Authentication Phrase: GADGET INSECT EUPHORIC" is a strange phrase. Real lenders have secure ways to verify your identity; they don't use random code words printed on a postcard.

🚩 (4) Vague Threats
Notice how it mentions an "important matter" regarding the loan but never actually says what is wrong? That is because nothing is usually wrong. They just want you on the phone to sell you unnecessary services or steal your data.

🚩 (5) Beware of 1-800 Numbers
Please note, this is not the bank's official phone number. If we ever need to speak with you directly, we will always direct you to contact one of our trusted local branches.

Tips to Stay Safe: If you have concerns about your mortgage, contact us directly. Use the phone number listed on your monthly statement or on our official website. Avoid calling numbers found on suspicious mailings, as they may not be legitimate.

Notice: Mortgages filed at county courthouses are considered public records, making this information legally accessible. As a result, it may be used by third parties, including solicitors, to contact borrowers.
